Shoulder pain and treatment

There are different conditions that can cause your shoulder pain. Some conditions  that affect your chest such as heart disease or gallbladder disease may also cause shoulder pain.  the shoulder pain can come from somewhere else in the body, other than the shoulder and is called referred pain which usually doesn’t get worse when you move your arm or shoulder.

A commonly treated shoulder injury by Dr. Waling is the rotator cuff.

The rotator cuff is made up of muscles and tendons covering the shoulder joint. It holds the bones in place, and allows the arm to lift and reach overhead.  The main muscles of the rotator cuff are the supraspinatus, infraspinatus, teres minor and subscapularis.

The chance for rotator cuff injury increases with age. The most common cause of rotator cuff injury is tendon degeneration caused by overuse of the rotator cuff muscles and tendons over the years. Playing sports with repetitive overhead motions – such as baseball, tennis or rowing –  increase the risk for shoulder injuries.
